There are only about 500 restaurants and pizza makers in the entire world that have been certified by the Associazione Verace Pizza napoletana (i.e. The True Neapolitan Pizza Association). A16 Rockridge is one of them. In fact, it’s number 484. (You can see its certificate hanging on the wall near the front door.)
To carry the seal of the AVPN is to adhere to a long history of authentic pizza making centered around Naples in Southern Italy. It’s about the ingredients, how the pizza is formed and the the way in which it’s baked. All in which the team at A16 Rockridge has prided itself and what guests can experience first-hand when sitting along the chef’s counter during our Rockridge Neighborhood Heritage Food Tour.
A16 Rockridge also specializes in the authentic, rustic fare of fresh pasta, and house-butchered and house-cured meats centered around the restaurant’s namesake, the A16. The Autostrada 16 is a highway that runs across Italy from Napoli to Bari. As our friendly chef Daniel McChesney-Young likes to put it, “If Italy is a boot, then the A16 is its ankle bracelet.”
In 2015, co-owner and wine director Shelley Lindgren won the James Beard award for Outstanding Wine Program. Between A16 Rockridge and her sister restaurant A16 in San Francisco’s Marina District, Shelley has put together a wine list that showcases southern Italian bottles that you will certainly not find at any BevMo. Local Food Adventures guests who upgrade to our optional VIP Adventurer package will enjoy a glass of lesser-known grapes like Gragnano, a wine named the perfect pizza-pairing wine by locals and experts alike.
But wine is not the only Italian libation you can enjoy at A16 Rockridge. The restaurant is also known for its outstanding selection of apéritifs and digestifs, especially amaros and camparis. In fact, A16 Rockridge celebrates Negroni Week usually around the first week of June. No meal at A16 Rockridge should go without a taste.
Guests of our Rockridge Neighborhood Heritage Food Tour enjoy a group-on-one presentation from one of A16 Rockridge’s pizzaiolos (Italian for pizza maker), fresh-from-the-oven Napoletana pizza, a delicious homemade dessert authentic in its Italian roots and an additional surprise that will certainly make your tastebuds ready for more.
