Coming to Town for a Raiders Game? 6 Great Things to Do in Oakland While You’re Here

Stefanie Hutson • Sep 11, 2019

In 2020, the Oakland Raiders will up stakes and move to a new stadium in Las Vegas.  If you’re heading to town to catch them in action one last time, you might be wondering about other things to do in Oakland during your trip. To help you out, we’ve pulled together a list of some of the best activities around the city.

Take a Food Tour

Hey, we never said this list wouldn’t be a little biased. Here at Local Food Adventures, we specialize in two things: food and Oakland. We love our community, and we’d be delighted to show some of the best Oakland has to offer.

Love a good barbeque and brew? You’ll love our Oakland Meets San Francisco Food Tour. It gives you the option to meet your guide in San Francisco or Oakland, and the tour takes you to four delicious, hearty stops (five if you start in San Francisco) featuring incredible barbeque, a local brew, and more.

Coming at the start of the season in October? We’ve got an Oakland Cemetery Tour that’s will brings you to the columbarium that’s also the final resting place of former Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis.

Hit the Links

A day out on the golf course can be just the right thing to balance out the noise and crowds at the game. If you’re looking for a great local course with reasonable rates, check out Lake Chabot Golf Course. The course has recently been re-seeded, and they’ve got both a standard 18-hole course and an executive par 3.

Lake Chabot also offers disc golf, and you can learn more or make reservations on their website.

Be Daring

If you’re really feeling brave, Trapeze Arts offers flying trapeze classes for all skill levels. It’s open to all ages of children and adults, and many students are ready to attempt a catch by the end of their very first class.

Students wear safety belts connected to lines, so there’s no actual danger – but there’s nothing like climbing a narrow ladder and jumping off a tall platform with no parachute to make you feel alive. You can learn more and sign up here.

Get High

If you enjoy climbing, Great Western Power Company is a great place to get an adrenaline rush. They offer lead climbing, top rope climbing, bouldering, and even Crossfit. If you’re a first timer looking to try something new, check out their Intro to Climbing classes, which are offered regularly.

You can learn more about their classes and facility on their website.

Check Out a Trivia Night

Oakland has a thriving trivia night scene, and if you find yourself in town during the early part of the week, you shouldn’t have any trouble finding a game. No matter what kind of atmosphere you’re looking for, you’ll probably find it.

Oakland Wiki has a great list of locations and times for trivia nights in the area, but we especially love the Trivia Nights at Original Pattern Brewing Company, one of our stops on our Oakland/Jack London Square Meets San Francisco Food Tour. Every Tuesday night they host local musician Liliana Urbain for an evening of trivia with funky theme.

Have a Laugh

Enjoy great stand-up? Don’t miss Comedy Oakland. It’s a small club, but they attract more big talent than their square footage might imply. They call themselves “a little club with big laughs”, and they serve up a mixture of local talent and serious pros who’ve done appearances on networks like HBO, NBC, and Comedy Central.

They offer 5 shows each week, with one on Thursday and two each on Friday and Saturday. The best part? Comedy Oakland is housed in the Spice Monkey restaurant, and they serve up globally-inspired cuisine cooked with fresh ingredients on-site. Check out their website to learn more about upcoming events and performances.

Most of All, Enjoy Your Time in Oakland!

No matter how you choose to spend your time in Oakland, we hope you enjoy it – and if you do choose to join us on one of our food tours , we can’t wait to meet you! Go Raiders!

Mother’s Day, which falls on Sunday, May 9th this year, couldn’t be a better day to celebrate your mom and give her a special gift to make sure she knows how much you cherish her.
