Best Things to do in San Francisco – Food, Fun, and Fine Art

Arielle Goodfriend • Apr 04, 2020

Famous for its beautiful scenery, culinary excellence, and rich culture, the city of San  Francisco offers its visitors the finest worldly experiences and enjoyments. According to the San Francisco Travel Association , more than 25 million people visit the “City by the Bay” each year looking for some of the best things to do in San Francisco when it comes to art and culture. Since the city is only seven by seven miles, the fun is actually not quite hard to find, especially if you know where to look.

Best Things to do in San Francisco

Art Museums

SFMOMA | San Francisco Museum of Modern Art

If you are a connoisseur of modern and contemporary art, look no further than SFMOMA’s internationally recognized collection. As the first museum on the West Coast to exclusively feature 20th-century-art, the SFMOMA has established itself as a monument of  cultural significance in the SF Bay Area. Annually, across its seven gallery floors, SFMOMA  showcases numerous, fluctuating collections that incorporate painting, sculpture,  photography, architecture, design, and media arts.

For individuals and groups alike, SFMOMA offers optional staff guided and/or  audio-headset tours, onsite parking, and popular dining options.

Address: 151 Third St, San Francisco, CA 94103
Tickets: Free for members; $0-$25 for nonmembers
For more information, go to www.sfmoma.org

Legion of Honor | Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco

If historical art is your cup of tea, then the Legion of Honor is sure to impress. Built to  honor the Californian soldiers who died during their service in World War I, this French  neoclassical building overlooks the Golden Gate Bridge and features collections that reach  across four millennia of world history. In 1972, the Legion of Honor partnered with the de  Young Museum to form the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

Onsite, the Legion of Honor also offers a restoration center, special exhibition galleries, and  a cafe. Additionally, patrons can enjoy the museum’s front courtyard and its captivating  exterior gardens.

Address: Lincoln Park – 100 34th Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94121
Tickets: Free for members; $0-$15 for nonmembers  (All tickets include same-day general admission to the de Young Museum)

Wine & Dine

The following restaurants train their employees extensively on their menus, have gluten free/vegan options, and accept reservations:

A16

Nestled comfortably in the Marina District, A16 offers some of the best Italian wine and  cuisine that money can buy. Executive chef Nicolette Manescalchi closely oversees their impressive menu—which includes [what I consider to be] the best pizza in the city. Co-owner and wine director Shelley Lindgren travels to Italy to personally taste the wine that she hand-selects for their menu.

The restaurant’s ambiance (extending to lighting, decor, layout, and artwork) is comfortably  elegant and notably striking in and of itself. In addition, its sister restaurant A16 Rockridge is a featured stop on our Rockridge Neighborhood Heritage Food Tour.

Nopa

The combination of Nopa’s friendly, community-centric atmosphere with their  seasonal/locally sourced ingredients makes their wood-fired (predominantly American)  cuisine nothing short of mouthwatering. Nopa showcases new menus on a weekly basis  and provides their servers with consistent behind-the-scene food/wine tastings and  debriefings—equipping the staff to provide authentic recommendations and informative  answers to customer inquiries.

Nopa serves dinner every evening of the week and offers brunch on the weekends.

Address: 560 Divisadero St. @ Hayes SF, CA 94117

Public Parks

Salesforce Urban Rooftop Park

Downtown San Francisco, located on the roof of the Salesforce Transit Center, is the  beautiful Salesforce Park. Open to the public, this 5.4 acre park harbors 600 trees, 16,000  plants, lively fountains (including the interactive “Bus Fountain”—one of the world’s longest  pieces of water-art) and its very own amphitheater. Patrons can enjoy leisurely strolls  and/or free events such as live music, dance, and artistic workshops.

The Presidio | San Francisco National Park at the Golden Gate

The Presidio is a National Historic Landmark District—and rightfully so, for it has been  around far longer than San Francisco—the city that it presides in today. There are so many things to do in San Francisco, just o n the Presidio’s grounds! You can hike or bike 24 miles of trails with direct access to some of the loveliest beaches that San Francisco has to offer, spot over 300 species of birds, enjoy the outdoor art gallery,  immerse yourself in the surrounding historical culture and eat at the city’s largest outdoor picnic area.

Moms are superheroes who deserve to be celebrated every year—but especially this year, as they have been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic. According to CBS News , women lost one million more jobs than men during the pandemic, and the year also highlighted the lack of affordable childcare options. Mother’s Day, which falls on Sunday, May 9th this year, couldn’t be a better day to celebrate your mom and give her a special gift to make sure she knows how much you cherish her.
